Dr. Greg
Burkett, Diplomate
American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice
Avian Veterinary Services
Dr. Greg Burkett has extensive experience in all aspects of aviculture.
He began breeding birds in 1979, starting with a few budgies and cockatiels
at the hobby level. Over the last 15 years Dr. Burkett has successfully
bred over 40 different species of Psittacines and is currently managing
a small aviary consisting of more than 20 different species. He has developed many handfeeding techniques, bird care philosophies,
and nursery management protocols.
Even before high school, Dr. Burkett’s intent was
to attend veterinary college and practice avian medicine and surgery.
He focused on his goal and graduated from North Carolina State University
College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. He opened his avian private practice
immediately upon graduating. Today he owns and operates a successful avian
practice in Durham, NC which treats only birds, including wildlife, chickens,
ducks, and all other avian species. Dr. Burkett became one of the first
100 veterinarians in the country to be board certified in avian medicine
in November, 2002. In 2004, he was appointed as an adjunct professor for
the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and currently teaches students
rotating through his practice.
